3 things to consider when choosing an SAT or ACT test date
Jan 04, 2024Confused about when to have your student take the SAT or ACT?
Here are the 3 most important things to consider when helping your student decide.
-
Spring of the junior year is typical - Most college counselors recommend the spring of a student’s junior year to take their first ‘real’ test. This primarily hinges on the level of math that your student has completed. The rule of thumb is that your student should have completed Algebra 2, preferably with Trigonometry, before attempting their first official test.
-
If they submit scores, take both SAT/ACT - Things are different in 2024 - both the SAT and ACT are equally accepted by colleges. I encourage students to try both tests - even if it’s a practice test. They may be surprised that they like one test better than the other and this gives them another option to excel.
-
Plot out other spring activities - Help your student navigate the tons of activities going on in the spring. Ideally you want a window of time - at least a few days before and after the test - to have the best focus on a test date. Here’s a short list to get you started:
-
Spring Break
-
College visits
-
Prom or other school social
-
Spring sports
-
College interviews
-
AP tests (usually the first two weeks of May)
-
Final exams
The college process is daunting for everyone; don't be afraid to reach out and ask questions!
