"We Do Hard Things," and Why You Should Too!
Feb 01, 2024Yesterday a parent reached out to strategize the next step for their student who had been struggling with math this last semester. Before Christmas we had talked about the possibility of him moving down from an Honors class to a standard pre-Calculus class. While strategically this move made sense, his dad countered that "in this family, we do hard things."
We do hard things.
Why is doing hard things important? Here are 3 great reasons!
-
Doing hard things helps us improve.
It's too easy to get in a rut, to get complaisant with the status quo, to get too comfortable. But when the unexpected happens or when we challenge ourselves to try something new and difficult, suddenly we have to learn new skills. Now we are in unfamiliar territory, outside of our comfort zone. We have to pay attention, discover new things, try methods and tactics that force us to be on our toes. In the end, we are not only better students or workers or operators, but also we are better humans.
-
Doing hard things keeps us humble.
When we encounter a problem that's truly difficult we are reminded that we do not have all the answers. No one, no matter how educated or naturally talented, knows everything about everything. But in our everyday lives it's easy to pretend that we have it all together and that we are the masters of our tiny universe. Hard things force on us the hard truth that we aren't masters at all and that we have so much yet to learn.
-
Doing hard things makes us work together.
Good news! We don't have to know everything, because there are always people around us who do have the answers. And if they don't have the answers, they are also just as excited to go find them with us. This is how we do hard things - together.
So the next time we face a daunting challenge whether it's actual rocket science or just feels like it - remember that in this family, on this team, in this organization we do hard things.
And even if we fail spectacularly it will still be worth the effort because we will be better humans for it, both individually and together.
